The evening event was a trial run and crowds were quick to express their approval as the Quay was bustling within minutes of the event starting at 4pm.
‘We’ve been trying to do this for a long time,’ said Steve Le Poidevin, the owner of Balthazar.
‘This turnout just shows that people want this kind of continental, European vibe. It’s not really even started and it’s already buzzing. People want to be outside – look at that stunning view. I think this is just what the seafront is made for.’
He said Balthazar was going ‘all-in’ for the inaugural event, with DJs and music playing out to sea until just gone midnight – Town was a party and everyone was on the guest list.
With some 20 stalls lined up between Crown Pier and Albert Pier, there was plenty to enjoy. From food and drink to local arts and crafts stalls, along with al fresco dining and live music. All topped off with a golden hour atmosphere, and the liberating knowledge of no work or school in the morning.
‘It’s a really great idea,’ said birthday girl Karyn Jackson, who was soaking up the ambience and cocktails with her friends.
‘There’s a lot going on on the other side of the island and we need more here. Sundays are great, but Saturdays feel nicer, you don’t have to think about tomorrow.’
Stallholder Amelia Smitheram from Willow and Bloom said she was pleased at the opportunity to bring her jewellery and trinkets to the seafront for the first time.
‘I’m so excited to finally be able to do one,’ she said.
‘We can’t do Sundays, so we were really chuffed when they said they were doing a Seafront Saturday. It’s so lovely and we’ve got good music. I think it’s great.’
Even along the main shopping streets, local shops and eateries said they had noticed an increase in footfall.
‘It’s definitely been busier,’ said Grace Serrano from Cafe Emilia.
‘I’m all for it, it’s nice to have something different. At least we can rest still tomorrow.’
Mint 56 owner Tom Gudelis said he had closed his restaurant in Town to bring the ever-popular bean jar to the event with his ‘Mint Mint’ mobile catering van.
‘Everyone is going to be here, so we thought this made sense,’ he said.
