Construction teams are on site at the former Quayside, transforming it into a new shop.

Planning permission was granted more than a year ago to demolish the remains of the homeware shop on Northside, which closed in 2015 and has stood empty ever since.

In its place was proposed a large retail unit, with 70 parking spaces.

The application came from TJ Morris, which is now creating a new Home Bargains store on the site.

The firm has declined to give an update, but work is moving ahead. Most of the granite arches on the south side of the site have now been demolished. There is a pile driver on the site, and evidence that piles have been driven in around the site, which now has a layer of hardcore on the ground.

Yesterday, Geomarine staff were working on the site, and there was also a digger.

There was also evidence of work taking place inside Durlston House – the two-storey house on the junction between North Quay and Trafalgar Road.

There were two skips outside the house and piles of rubbish outside, which appears to have been stripped out from the building. The house has planning permission to be converted into two one-bed flats.

No opening date has been announced for the business and the jobs at the store are not yet being advertised on the HB recruitment website.
