The new installation has replaced ageing equipment that had been deemed unsafe and closed off last October.
The initiative was sparked quickly after the closure of the gym area due to health and safety concerns was reported. Within hours, Bowel Cancer Guernsey’s directors agreed to fund the replacement, working swiftly with the authorities to bring the project to life.
Anne Brouard, chairwoman of Bowel Cancer Guernsey, said the charity had been keen to act.
‘Staying active is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce your risk of bowel cancer. We’re pleased to work with Delancey Park and encourage more islanders to take small steps every day that support their long-term health.’
The new equipment, located near the children’s playground, is designed for people of all ages and abilities. Inclusion officer Steve Melbourne highlighted its community value.
‘This initiative not only enhances fitness facilities but also promotes awareness of bowel cancer prevention through regular exercise. It’s a positive step forward for public health and recreation on the island,’ he said.
The project was not without its challenges. Sourcing like-for-like replacements and customising the equipment in Bowel Cancer Guernsey’s signature colour required coordination with manufacturers and local contractors. One existing piece of equipment was repainted locally to match the new set.
The installation follows a similar project in 2016, when Bowel Cancer Guernsey funded 10 exercise machines at Saumarez Park. The charity continues to promote healthy living, regular screenings, and awareness of bowel cancer symptoms.
Mrs Brouard expressed gratitude to donors whose contributions made the project possible.
‘Thanks to their support, we’re able to provide free, accessible fitness opportunities that benefit the whole community,’ she said.
