Red tomatoes, Victoria sponges and purple flowers were on display at the South Show this year, with around 1,000 entries filling the tables in the St Martin’s Community Centre.

Since 1909 the South Show has been a popular community event, taking entries from four parishes including Forest, St Martin’s, St Andrew’s and St Peter Port.

‘Quite a few people come to this event, it’s the start of the summer for people,’ said vice-president Brenda Sparkes, who has been organising the show for over 20 years.

This year has displayed many new names on the tables alongside those who enter annually. One person had more than 60 entries to their name.

Show secretary Kevin Smale said that there were 655 entries in the horticultural section alone.

The winners of the categories are awarded money or a trophy and over 50 trophies will be presented at the conclusion of the show today. ‘One of those dates back to 1931 – it’s proper silver,’ said Mrs Sparkes.

Every year the South Show has a range of people coming along, from children to people into their 80s. ‘To me it’s like a little English village show,’ said Mrs Sparkes.

The show today offers up more entertainment alongside the traditional ‘tented’ exhibits, with a range of family activities, performances from the Guernsey Jazz Orchestra and the Guernsey Majorettes, and the GSPCA Island Dog Show.

Entry is £4 for adults and £1 for children over five years old. The show day runs from 10am to 5pm, with a prize giving at 6pm.
