Torteval is likely to lose three of its four postboxes, leaving it with just the box near the former Torteval Stores, while St Peter’s could lose six of its eight boxes.
It is part of a major shake-up from Guernsey Post, which is looking to close two-thirds of its 141 boxes in a bid to make the postal service more efficient. Islanders will have the chance to have their say from today in a month-long consultation.
‘It’s important to emphasise that these are initial proposals only,’ a Guernsey Post spokeswoman said.
‘The ongoing consultation process is vital and will help shape and inform any final decisions. We encourage all interested parties to share their views.’
Northern St Peter Port could see a big cull in boxes. Post boxes at Beau Sejour and Admiral Park will be kept, but nine others nearby would close.
The Town centre is less badly affected, with the White Rock keeping its box, and those at the Weighbridge, Smith Street, Town Church and Market Steps retained, but with earlier daily collections at 5am.
The only central box proposed to close will be the one at the Guernsey Information Centre.
In southern St Peter Port, Trinity Square, Frossard House and South Esplanade are keeping their boxes, along with the oldest post box in the British Isles on Union Street. There will also be boxes kept on Kings Road, at the PEH, in Fort George and at Waitrose in the Rohais.
Both postboxes on the Grange will shut, along with the box on Upland Road.
St Andrew’s could be left with just one box – at the Bailiff’s Cross Co-op – while St Saviour’s could have two, at Perelle and the parish church. Forest could also be left with two boxes, at the airport and by Forest Stores.
Castel could have five boxes including Fairfield, Cobo Post Office and Rue des Goddards.
St Martin’s will keep six – fewer than half – of its post boxes.
Two post boxes will be kept on the Bridge – one on North Side and one on the southern side of the Bridge, but a third on the Bridge itself is earmarked to close.
St Sampson’s detached could lose its one post box, but Vale detached will keep three of its five boxes, while the main parish would keep just three boxes out of its present 11 – North Side, Maraitaine Road and Les Mielles Road.
St Sampson’s will keep five of its boxes.
Three boxes are set to be moved.
This will be subject to landowners’ agreement, so the new location of the boxes on Rue Sauvage in St Sampson’s and Rocquaine Road in St Peter’s have not been confirmed yet. But the third box, at Manor Stores in St Martin’s, is understood to be moving to the entrance of the doctor’s surgery, subject to planning permission.
Full information on the proposals and how to respond can be found at www.guernseypost.com/postbox-consultation.
The consultation runs until 12 September.
