Fun of the fairground draws crowds to North Show

The fairground has returned to the North Show for the first time in seven years, much to the delight of young islanders.

‘I think they’re popular, we’ve had some really good feedback already and it’s a really nice atmosphere down there,’ said North Show president Emma Sarre.

‘People have been asking for it and it’s worked out really well having them back.’

Around five different UK companies, under the organisation of James Cole from Coles Amusements, are at the North Show, with about 20 people having come over to man the rides.

Mr Cole has been keen to come to Guernsey and give a positive image of the fair to islanders. Some fairground specials this year include Super Trooper, Dodgems, Crazy Frog, Tango, giant slide and a churro stand.

‘We’ve tried to come over for the last three years, but we’ve finally managed to do it this year, so we’re really, really pleased,’ said Mr Cole.

The fairground group started on the road at 4am on Monday to make it across the Channel for the show, and this is the first time the groups have been over to Guernsey for an event like this.

Coles Amusements have been in Mr Cole’s family for generations, passed down to him over time.

‘We travel around the UK, we do private events, music events and agricultural shows,’ he said.

All the rides fold up and for bigger events like the North Show different companies come together to provide the fairground experience.

The companies have brought some of the most popular rides this year and always try to provide something to suit everybody.

‘We enjoy what we do, and we like it, we’ve got the family doing it so it’s a win for us,’ said Mr Cole, who said the North Show was 'a lovely event'.

‘It’s well laid out and all the people are lovely, everybody we spoke to along the way was really helpful.’

Mr Cole hopes to return to Guernsey next year and stay a little longer, and said he would like to turn North Beach car park into a fairground.

‘We’re looking into four or five days in St Peter Port in North Beach car park. It’s just in the talks now but hopefully we can make that work next year.’
