A bloomin’ good time at Battle of Flowers

Queues of traffic lined the roads surrounding Saumarez Park as some motorists waited up to 45 minutes to get into the North Show car park.

Home Farm car park was completely full and North Show organisers had to open a second field to cater for everyone wanting to watch the Battle of Flowers.

‘The Battle of Flowers is wonderful, it’s so good to see such a variety of different floats and different colours,’ said show manager Josh Cotran-Gabriel.

‘Both our main car park and overflow car park are completely full. It’s the sign of a very successful show.’

A separate car park used for volunteers and caterers was opened to the public to accommodate show-goers.

‘I think it’s down to a combination of things. We have plenty here for people to come and enjoy and the weather is very much on our side,’ he added.

The Battle of Flowers was popular and saw more people watching than in the past couple of years.

For the Jee and Gabriel families, it was the second year the ‘children’ have taken over.

‘We both saw Wicked and knew we had to do a Wicked float,’ said Beth Gabriel, dressed as Glinda.

‘Our parents have done this for years, but this is only the second time the “children” have been in charge, even though we’re in our late 20s.

‘It’s such a great community atmosphere, we always say we prefer Battle day over Christmas Day.’

Meredith Jee, dressed as Elphaba, said that it was a real family feeling.

‘I think this is the reason that we’re all so close, is by doing this every year,’ she said.

‘We’d encourage anyone to get involved and keep the show alive.’

More than 50 floats and decorated bicycle entries in the Battle were involved across 15 categories, and there was an additional category this year for Liberation Day cavalcade floats.
