Five deputies up for vacant role on P&R

A total of five deputies have now confirmed their bids to fill the vacant seat on Policy & Resources, with the senior committee expected to announce its preferred candidate this week.

David Goy and Chris Blin told the Guernsey Press yesterday they had formally expressed an interest to P&R about being nominated for the role.

They join Yvonne Burford, Jayne Ozanne and Marc Laine – all of whom announced their intentions earlier this month – in declaring their candidacy.

A newcomer to the States, having won election for the first time in June, Deputy Goy said he believed he could be a ‘valuable member’ of P&R despite his lack of political experience.

He said he thought he would be of most value in areas relating to digital and technology, having worked extensively with the States and its former IT provider Agilisys in the past. He added he would not stand for the vacancy if he did not secure P&R’s nomination.

Deputy Blin said he was expecting to meet members of P&R either today or tomorrow regarding his candidacy.

As one of a handful of deputies without a seat on a committee currently, he said he would be able immediately to devote all of his time and attention to P&R’s mandate, which other candidates may find harder owing to commitments on other committees.

He was optimistic he could use his commercial and linguistic capabilities effectively, particularly in matters relating to external relations, should he be nominated to join the committee.

He would also continue to push for the establishment of an offshore wind farm.

If he did not receive P&R’s official backing Deputy Blin did not completely rule out still standing for the vacancy, but said he would want to do what felt right in the context of P&R’s wishes.
