Bethan Haines announced in May that she was leaving the role which she had held since 2008 and the process for recruiting a permanent successor remains at an early stage.
When applications are invited, it seems they will be for a slightly re-styled role, with the title chief financial officer being adopted as part of chief executive Boley Smillie’s work to refresh the States’ leadership structure.
‘This postholder will take on responsibilities historically covered by the States treasurer.
‘Recruitment for that role will take place in the coming months,’ said Policy & Resources’ treasury lead Charles Parkinson.
Deputy Parkinson is currently working with other politicians and senior officials on preparation of a draft 2027 budget, which P&R must publish early in October.
The senior committee did not identify a particular official who was leading budget preparations but had no concerns about the advice or support it was receiving.
‘In the interim, the responsibilities of the previous States treasurer are being covered by a mix of senior staff across treasury and finance teams,’ said Deputy Parkinson.
‘This is working well but is not a long-term solution given the need for appropriate resilience and accountability for such an important senior role.’
