Flights were delayed twice after a man gained entry to the airport by climbing the perimeter fence on successive days.

Russell Payne, 51, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court from custody yesterday, charged with a total of eight offences connected to the weekend’s events.

Crown Advocate Jenny McVeigh set out the allegations for the court.

The trespasser first attempted to enter the airport perimeter at 5am on Saturday.

He was challenged and escorted to an office in the airport terminal where he was arrested in connection with another matter.

Operations at the airport were temporarily stopped because it was necessary to carry out a search of the area involved for security reasons.

The first flight of the day was delayed by only 20 minutes or so and flights soon caught up.

The following day at 9.30am a woman who lives on the northern airport boundary called police to say she could see a man behaving unusually and she filmed it on her mobile phone.

Once a trespasser was again reported police officers were despatched to the airport and an incoming flight from Gatwick had to be held overhead for some time while the matter was being resolved.

Advocate McVeigh made an application for Mr Payne to be remanded in custody.

Defending, Advocate Sarah Morgan said there would be no bail application.

Judge Gary Perry ordered that a medical assessment should be carried out to determine the state of the defendant’s mental health.

Mr Payne will appear in court again on Thursday.
