Volunteer Cathy Morgan said that the lack of rain and issues with the sprinkler system had affected some of the garden's pumpkin yield, but it has not dented preparations for the day.
Halloween-themed decorations are out in full force and a busy roster of activities are planned.
‘It’s really fun,’ she said.
‘The children come in all sorts of costumes which is great to see. We have people who say "we’re going to be away for half-term, but we can come and take part" and they haven’t missed it.
'The whole thing has become almost like one of the island’s fixtures.’
The event’s signature activity is the seasonal ‘spookalicious soups’ made from the garden’s own vegetables.
This year they will include the witches’ veggie brew, the tantalising tomato tureen, squinty minty pea potion, tasty tatty and lurid leek, and the souper squelchy squash.
Other activities available include the mysterious ‘Halloween Hunt,’ the ‘Creepy Craft Cavern’ for arts and crafts, with dancing and music provided by the Belles & Broomsticks band.
Alf Symphorien will be running a rabbit petting enclosure, and attendees can compete to guess the weight of a pumpkin.
There are many ‘ghoulish games’ being run, such as mysterious marbles, trick or treat, lucky line, the name game, and the ‘Build a Haunted House’ activity.
The garden has seen more than 600 people pass through their gates throughout the day in the past, and organisers hope to see hundreds in festive fancy dress attending again.
The free event is at the Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden at Saumarez Park, from 11am to 3pm this Saturday.
Soups will be served from 11.30am.
