And since then about 3,000 parcels a month have been handled via the service, which provides a UK address in Portsmouth for Guernsey residents to use if they order items from companies that do not deliver to the island. These are then shipped over.
‘The response has been absolutely wonderful,’ said head of commercial Cassy Fish.
‘It’s just gone from strength to strength.
‘It launched with a wonderful air of positivity and it’s just continued on that track. We’ve not had a single day where someone hasn’t signed up.’
But Guernsey Post was not about to stand still, she said. Next week the service will be extended to residents of Alderney and Sark.
And it is planning to add Primark to the list of retailers it caters for, even though that shop has only a ‘click and collect’ service on its website.
MyUKAddress launched in response to customer demand for a way to have items delivered here that were not available locally.
Soon after MyUKAddress the Guernsey Post launched its RockShopper website, an online directory of stores which either deliver directly to the island, or can be used via the delivery service.
And this also serves as a marketplace for local firms, with about a dozen signed up.
‘We would love to have more local shops on there,’ said Mrs Fish.
Even shops which do not have a website can join, with Guernsey Post offering to deliver items to customers who buy in-store, but might not be able to take the item away with them immediately.
‘Ultimately it’s all about convenience for customers,’ she said, ‘and we’d love to pull in the local element.’
The most popular items ordered in the first year were clothes, and about 85% of orders were for small parcels that attract the lowest delivery charge.
‘We see everything from Zara handbags to shoes and Ikea flatpack furniture.’
Mrs Fish said she was grateful to all the staff who had worked on the project.
‘A massive thank you to the team behind it, from those in Portsmouth to the developers on the project team, and to the posties for going out and delivering it all.’
