Coffee trader’s story could hit the big screen

Guernseyman William Le Lacheur’s pivotal role in helping Costa Rica to establish itself as a sovereign nation is to be the subject of a feature film, some of which may be shot in the island.

Costa Rican actor Jose Palma is visiting the island along with fellow producers Deepak Sikka and Josh Harris, and screenwriter and executive producer Jeremy Sheldon.

They met Economic Development president Sasha Kazantseva-Miller and committee member Haley Camp, who has taken on responsibility for film industry liaison. They have also taken the opportunity to scout suitable locations.

Mr Palma said the idea of turning Le Lacheur’s story into a feature film was suggested to his team by Costa Rica’s ambassador to the UK, Rafael Ortiz Fabrega.

‘It sparked our imagination and made us question why this story has never been told in film before,’ he said.

The script is still several months away from being finalised – the finished film could potentially hit screens in 2027 or 2028 – and the team is keen to involve local creatives during the process.

‘The scope is huge because we’re going to need the participation of film-makers here,’ Mr Palma said, suggesting that a successful release of the feature – which has the working title Black Gold – could boost the already rapidly growing film scene here.

‘Guernsey has already changed our country, so who’s to say that from an artistic perspective, we can’t contribute to film-makers telling stories here that everybody wants to see? We’re very, very motivated to make this happen as soon as possible, but we cannot rush something this culturally significant for both locations. We need to make sure we do it right.’
