Local artists put finishing touches to new airport mural

Puffins, the Guernsey Lily and seaweed all feature in the new Guernsey-inspired mural freshly painted in the check-in area at the airport.

The new mural which covers the wall to the left of the check-in desks has been painted by local artists Tiffany Anna Matthews and her partner Andrew ‘Woodie’ Woodward.

‘It’s bold and bright, but we wanted to avoid negative colours, like red,’ said Miss Matthews.

‘We thought about doing an iconic character like Victor Hugo but we couldn’t find a good enough picture that we could blow up this big, so we stuck with the puffin, which is associated with Guernsey Airport, and we have the airport’s coordinates, mackerel from the sea, the Guernsey Lily and seaweed.’

The mural includes very little of the traditional Guernsey green which was a conscious decision by the couple in the planning stage, as they wanted to create a mural that was inspired by Guernsey, but that was also abstract.

And as well as iconic Guernsey symbols, the mural also features one of Miss Matthews’ classic bees and the Butterfield logo as the sponsors of the project.

‘It’s amazing, it brings the space to life,’ said Claire Heaume, marketing manager at Butterfield.

The work took Miss Matthews and Mr Woodward five weeks to complete.

‘It’s been hard because we both work full time so it’s been as and when we can,’ said Mr Woodward.

‘It’s probably, if we dedicated full days to it, a week’s work.’

The idea to have a mural came after Miss Matthews had done some artwork at the harbour and Guernsey Ports commercial development project manager David Buddery spoke to her about the idea of having a mural in the airport.

‘It’s awesome. It’s been a long time coming and it’s great to see it done,’ he said. ‘It looks really cool.’
