A motion to sell the building – currently occupied by Dean of Guernsey and St Andrew’s rector the Very Rev. Tim Barker and his wife – was passed unanimously at a parish meeting earlier this month.
However, following that vote, some St Andrew’s residents complained they were unaware a debate on the sale was taking place, saying the wording in La Gazette Officielle had not made it clear the matter was up for discussion.
As a result, another meeting was held this week, during which about 30 people who attended were asked to ratify the previous vote.
They did so unanimously, with Mr Barker among those supporting the plans.
The douzaine has therefore been directed to immediately arrange for the rectory to be put up for sale, with the proceeds to be used to convert a barn at the site into a new dwelling for use as a rectory.
The estimated cost of this work is £400,000.
The money will also fund temporary accommodation for the rector until the conversion is complete, at an estimated cost of £30,000 per annum, and alterations to the church, including adding toilet facilities, which will cost about £230,000.
Parishioners will be consulted again if any of these price quotations end up exceeding their estimates.
