Charity Gifts for the Elderly and Vulnerable has been fundraising throughout the year, including through its big bumper raffle, to buy gifts for community nurses to take to their patients. The gifts have now been handed over for delivery through the community.
‘We have had more than 3,500 this year, it seems to be more and more each year,’ said organiser Donna Patch.
‘When it started in 2015 we had 50 gifts.’
The presents range from mugs to large print puzzles and any left over will be donated to Les Bourgs Hospice, St Julian’s House and the Women’s Refuge on Christmas Eve.
‘There are 480 people at the minute who receive care from the community nursing team, so other places like St Julian’s House get gifts delivered too,’ said Mrs Patch.
Mrs Patch has focused on fundraising this year, and welcomed the help of her husband, family and other volunteers with wrapping all of the presents.
‘It’s been great to get the help from Ogier and Queens Road Medical Practice who said that their staff can help us on their volunteering days,’ she said.
Guernsey Post also helped by collecting the parcels and delivering them to the community nurses at the Castel Hospital ready for distribution.
