Lihou warden appeals for help after house damaged

Lihou Island is appealing for help after the house sustained substantial damage in Storm Goretti.

As well as damage to the back and front of the roof, tiles lost in the 80mph winds have ripped fascias boards off dormer windows, and even heavy outdoor furniture has been damaged

The house had only reopened last year after being closed due to damage inflicted by Storm Ciaran.

The property, on the island off Guernsey’s west coast, is owned and managed by a charity and often used by schools and youth groups.

Warden Steve Sarre only managed to get across the causeway for an hour on Friday to inspect the damage, due to unfavourable tides.

‘We’ve lost hundreds of tiles, part of the plant room roof is missing and a window downstairs was smashed,’ he said.

‘And we won’t know the full extent of the problem until we turn on the power and see if it’s working.’

‘It’s tricky to know if it’s worse than Ciaran until we have done a proper inspection.’

Neap tides mean the house is now inaccessible until next weekend, when Mr Sarre is hoping to organise a work party of volunteers to start the clear-up.

‘If anyone is free for a few hours next Sunday please let me know,’ he said. ‘We can then get an idea of skill sets and the maximum number of people.’

As well as damage to the back and front of the roof, tiles lost in the 80mph winds have ripped fascias boards off dormer windows, and even heavy outdoor furniture has been damaged.

‘It is really frustrating after all the hard work to be hit by this, it is going to be some time before we are open again,’ he said. ‘This will hit the charity hard as we were only just recovering after Storm Ciaran.

‘We have learnt a lot from the last storm about how to go about putting things right, but it’s very disheartening to be back at square one.’
