The committee removed him late yesterday in response to recent social media posts which it claimed were unhelpful, unfair and put one or more individuals at risk.

Deputy Curgenven received an email from the committee secretary, on behalf of all five members of Home Affairs, just after 4pm, and soon after officials briefed the media to confirm his departure.

‘The committee discussed, with concern, recent activity on social media including, but not exclusively, your video in respect of the formal discontinuation of an investigation into historical sexual offences,’ it said.

‘It further noted that there was, at a similar time, the naming of the officer by a third party and exchanges between yourself and a member of the public on the appropriateness of such posts.

‘While acknowledging that the case had attracted significant public commentary, the committee was of the opinion that your participation, and comments, could be seen as compromising your objectivity as a member of the group.’

Since his appointment to the oversight group, Deputy Curgenven has continued submitting formal written questions about police complaints issues, as he is entitled to as a States member.

Home Affairs president Marc Leadbeater first publicly suggested setting up the oversight group in September and it started work in November.

It has no powers over the review of the police complaints regime but is expected to influence how it is carried out.

The oversight group is chaired by Deputy Leadbeater and also includes Deputies Tina Bury, Haley Camp, Jayne Ozanne and Gavin St Pier.
