Darren Salituri, 39, was found dead by prison officers. They alerted the police.
He was on remand in prison, accused of drugging a woman before sexually assaulting her.
Prison governor John De Carteret said that police were now investigating the circumstances of his death and the Prison was undertaking its own internal investigation.
‘Firstly, it is important to state that any death in prison is a tragedy, and we will now work closely with the police to establish the full circumstances of the incident,’ he said.
‘This death will undoubtedly have an impact on many, not least his family. My thoughts are with them at this time.’
Detective chief inspector Ian Tanner said that the death was not currently being treated as suspicious and police would be undertaking a coronial investigation in line with standard practice. Inquiries are ongoing.
Officers have informed Salituri’s family, as well as the victims of his alleged offending.
Salituri appeared in the Magistrate’s Court in October of last year, where he entered no pleas and his case was committed for a Royal Court trial.
He faced two charges of administering substances to the woman without her consent, with the intention of stupefying or overpowering her, and one of sexual assault.
He was also charged with an assault on another female.
