Valentine’s Day Parkrun organisers do it with love

Love was in the air at L’Ancresse on Saturday morning as islanders laced up their running shoes for the first special Valentine’s Guernsey Parkrun.

Regular and first-time parkrunners turned up despite rather inclement weather to come together for the special event, which was an idea that came from a different Parkrun one that a local volunteer had seen in the UK.

‘I was looking into other parkruns in the UK to do a bit of parkrun tourism and found one in Ilford actually named Valentines.

‘The logistics didn’t work but I thought why not make a special Valentine’s Day Parkrun here instead, at home and with all of my Parkrun friends,’ said Soo Wellfair.

‘I imagine it will be a tad busier this morning.’

Runners were encouraged to dress up for the occasion.

‘It’s quite difficult to get the regular Parkrunners to leave their milestone t-shirts at home and rightly so – they have earned them and proudly wear them – but hopefully people will come out in reds and pinks.

‘You never know, we might even find someone dressed up as cupid,’ said Mrs Wellfair before the start of the run.

At the end of the 5km course volunteers shared the love in giving out love heart lollipops to finishers.

‘Parkrun takes place every Saturday and with Valentine’s Day landing on a Saturday this year it was great to have a themed event to mark it,’ said Mrs Wellfair.
