No pancakes at the Town Church for the first time in 15 years

For the first time in 15 years, there will be no pancakes at the Town Church today, as ongoing electrical works flatten plans for The Cheshire Home’s beloved Shrove Tuesday fundraiser.

The local home, which must raise £500,000 every year to provide care for islanders with serious physical disabilities, has had to cancel what would have been its 16th annual Pancake Day Fundraiser, due to unsafe construction works at the Town Church.

‘We are truly disappointed not to be able to host this year’s event,’ said home manager Mary Ellen Carter.

‘Pancake Day has always been such a special occasion for the Home and the wider community. As the event simply would not be the same away from town, we made the difficult decision to cancel rather than move to an alternative, less accessible venue.

‘We are immensely grateful to the Town Church, our chefs, volunteers and supporters who help make this day so wonderful each year. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2027.’

The ever-popular and successful fundraising event brings together local chefs from the Old Government House Hotel, Les Rocquettes Hotel, and more recently Le Platon, who flip a variety of fresh pancakes each year for the local community.

‘It's one of our most cherished community traditions,’ a spokesman for the Home said.

‘A wonderful coming-together of our team, our dedicated volunteers, and the talented chefs.’

The Lt-Governor Lt-General Richard Cripwell, a regular supporter of the event, had to recently withdraw his attendance this year due to another commitment.

‘At least he won’t be missing the day,’ said the spokesman.

‘And we won’t be missing his much-loved pancake-flipping masterclass.’

The Town Church is due to reopen tomorrow at 6.30pm with an Ash Wednesday service. Details can be found on its website at www.townchurch.net.
