Parish constables met last week and rejected a proposal to increase the annual tax to £25.

St Sampson’s constable Joe Abbotts said there had been a long and good-natured debate about the suggested rise.

‘After a long discussion it was felt best to leave dog tax where it is at this time,’ he said. ‘There were some differing views but the majority of constables were in favour of the status quo.’

The States estimate the number of dogs on the island to be somewhere between 6,000 and 10,000. In all parishes, the fee is currently £10 for all dogs more than six months in age.

Some parishes dedicate the sums raised to specific community projects, or to pay for dog waste bins. Failure to pay dog tax can lead to fines up to £500.

If constables had voted in favour of change, it would have needed to go to the States Assembly for final approval.
