Dubbed ‘Grow Green Miles’, the event is intended to become an annual institution, raising money for Grow’s work in the community – providing occupational training for adults with learning disabilities or difficulties.
‘I’ve always been passionate about getting outdoors, so of course I said yes to getting involved,’ said Bailiwick Social Prescribing link worker Jo Hollyer-Hill, who has taken on the role of a Grow Green Miles ambassador.
‘People who join in the event will get to improve their health and wellbeing, but they’ll also get community and motivation. Grow provides such an essential service to the island, and I think you can really get that feeling of fulfilment and motivation by getting up every day to help support them.’
Ms Hollyer-Hill has herself undertaken some similar athletic challenges in the past, last year walking or running every road, track and path on the island.
‘I was running down roads and paths I’d never seen before,’ she said.
‘Even though I was passionate about it before, the experience really made me love getting outside even more. I was seeing all the views and parts of the island I never would have seen.’
Ms Hollyer-Hill said that she hoped that Grow’s fundraiser would give other islanders a similar experience, and help them enjoy all the natural beauty that Guernsey has to offer.
In order to further encourage such enjoyment of the island’s great outdoors, Grow is also inviting walkers to take photos of all that is unusual or interesting on their May-time adventures. They intend to cultivate a catalogue of Guernsey’s ‘hidden gems’, which will be displayed all together at the end of the month.
Walkers will pay a small participation fee to join the fundraiser, which will be begun with a one-mile walk beginning and ending at Grow, set to be followed by a celebratory barbecue.
The event is open to adults, children, whole families, and corporate teams.
At its conclusion on 31 May, Grow will host a celebratory summer craft market following the final walk.
