Youngsters get quizzical to win their way to Jersey

AFTER knocking the local de Putron Challenge out of the park, a team of Year 6 brainiacs from Elizabeth College are heading to Jersey, to take on the inter-island final for Guernsey.

All Years Six and Eight pupils from the 21 local schools gathered at Beau Sejour for the ultimate and ever-popular school quiz of the year.

Funded by the Ana Leaf Foundation, the tense event is a chance for the island’s smart youngsters to flaunt their knowledge and go head-to-head in seven fast-paced rounds.

With fingers ready on the buzzer, the young pupils were tested on a variety of subjects, including maths, literature, history and science, as their teachers, parents and fellow pupils proudly cheered them on from a large audience, waving handmade, colourful posters in support.

After a gruelling tie-breaker against La Mare de Carteret, Elizabeth College primary took home the victory in the Year Six heat, with team members Florrie O’Driscoll, Sam Turville and Angus Essa.

‘I’ve never actually won something like that in my life,’ said 10-year-old Angus.

‘It’s once in a lifetime, oh my gosh, that was so tense. We worked pretty good together, Sam was on the maths, and I was just buzzing basically. I’m really excited to go to Jersey, haven’t been in a long time.’

BBC Guernsey reporter John Fernandez was returning quizmaster for the challenge, with Dan Gallienne, head of client services at event organisers Orchard PR, adjudicating.

‘I actually took part in the first ever one of these in sixth form,’ said Mr Gallienne.

‘It’s a fantastic event. It’s wonderful that children get the opportunity to come here and demonstrate how clever they are and what they’ve learned in their schools, in front of their peers. It’s really important, and it’s so nice for the parents and teachers to see them in this setting.

'There’s plenty of sports matches, and music performances and there’s always theatre and stage shows – this is something for the academic side, a chance to show everyone what they can do, and they really enjoy it.’

The Year 8 competition was won by Les Beaucamps.

The Jersey rounds take place in a fortnight and the inter-island final is being staged in Jersey on 24 March.

The final event will also be live-streamed so Guernsey supporters can watch remotely.
