Water Lanes petitioners delighted plans scrapped

THE neighbours who launched a petition to save the Water Lanes from being covered over have said they are ‘delighted’ with the news that the plans have been scrapped.

Yesterday Education, Sport & Culture and Environment & Infrastructure announced that instead of installing metal grids over the douit, a review into Collings Road and the surrounding area would take place.

Last July when the Guernsey Press revealed proposals to cover the Water Lanes, Darren and Natalie Davison from La Couture Inn set up a petition to prevent the Water Lanes being grated over and used as a cycle path for the new post-16 campus at Les Ozouets.

‘The petition really rallied people, it caught the public’s attention because the way it was going, not many people knew about it, so the petition put it in the spotlight,’ said Mr Davison.

‘There were a lot of people who were very passionate about it so we’re delighted with the response and the outcome.

‘I think it’s great news for the area, I’m really pleased.’

A Facebook group called The Water Lanes Diary was also set up at the same time as the petition, a space for people to share photos, stories and information of the Water Lanes. The page is now nearing 900 members.

Shortly after both were established, ESC announced a six-month pause to consider all of the options.

Just over six months later it agreed to back down and E&I has instead committed to a wider review of the whole area.

‘Looking at the reports, they’re going to be looking at Collings Road which I do think is a very dangerous road,’ said Mr Davison.

‘Hopefully that has drawn a line under that proposal and we can just enjoy the Water Lanes.

‘Collings Road is very dangerous, I try to avoid it at all costs myself, there’s some very big vehicles that go along there and on the pavement, and quite often, you just can’t get two vehicles through at the same time.

‘Ideally, it should be looked at as being one-way, and then possibly putting a cycle path in as well.’
