Drivers warned not to park near to Bella Luce scaffolding

St Martin’s constables have warned drivers not to park near scaffolding situated in the narrow lanes next to the site of the Bella Luce Hotel as pedestrians were being forced to walk in the road.

Scaffolding on the Bella Luce Hotel has led to drivers parking on the pavement, which St Martin’s officials have said was forcing pedestrians to walk in the road.

Scaffolding from the construction site is currently blocking the widest part of the road where cars often parked.

Senior constable Dave Beausire said drivers had been ignoring clear no parking signs and parking behind the scaffold, blocking the pavement and a bus stop.

‘We have been in touch with the developers of the site and it’s not their employees,’ he said.

‘I walked there on Friday myself and there were three cars on the pavement, that means pedestrians have to walk in the centre of the road to get past.’

He added that this was a particular problem as the site was close to St Martin’s Primary School.

‘As you can imagine this is especially dangerous at school times as the kids have to walk down the middle of the road.’

Mr Beasuire said the parish had taken the step of informing the police as the situation was getting worse.

‘Please do not park in this area, you are creating an accident waiting to happen,’ he said. ‘It is just common sense.’

The Bella Luce, which closed its doors three and a half years ago, is being transformed from a 21-room, four-star establishment into a high-end, 14-room boutique hotel.
