At about 5.10pm the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre was alerted to a structure fire at Leale’s Yard.
Fire crews and police were dispatched.
‘At initial attendance, the structure located at the rear of Leale’s Yard was ablaze and was of significant size,’ said Sergeant James De La Mare.
‘Immediately cordons were put in place to protect the public and protect the site.’
Police later collapsed the cordon down and managed traffic in the area. Residents in the area were advised to keep their windows shut.
‘There was some information to suggest that there was asbestos, but we contacted the managing director of the property who confirmed that there is no asbestos that he is aware of, which is a known issue for Leale’s Yard and there have been fires down here before,’ said Sgt De La Mare.
‘We are happy that the risk to the public is very minimal.’
Ambulance crews attended in case of smoke or asbestos inhalation. The fire service remained at the scene to ensure it did not reignite.
‘We will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire,’ said Sgt De La Mare.
‘Anyone who witnessed it or saw anyone leaving the area immediately at the time, should contact the police station and speak to the duty sergeant to relay any information.’
