The States confirmed this afternoon that John De Carteret had agreed to step aside on a temporary basis while that investigation takes place.

Mr De Carteret’s decision was made with the agreement of the Committee for Home Affairs and States chief executive Boley Smillie.

Interim management arrangements have been put in place, with Deputy Governor Tracey Mahy leading the prison for the time being.

‘Matters will be investigated fully and fairly and no one should draw any conclusion from the prison governor’s decision to temporarily step aside,’ said Mr Smillie.

‘I will provide an update once the investigation has concluded but will offer no further comment.’
