Fire crews were called to the site at about 8.30pm to a fire involving 30m by 10m of green waste.

They operated four mainline jets to extinguish the blaze, which was out shortly after 11pm.

The fire is understood to have occurred in a windrow that was due to be turned.

Garden waste material from households and commercial operators is processed at Mont Cuet, to produce soil conditioner.

This involves the material being shredded and left in piles, known as windrows, to naturally break down over a period of around three months.

Heat is generated as the material decomposes, and to reduce the risk of fire the windrows are regularly turned to prevent a build-up of temperature.

The fire service worked with site staff who used plant equipment to turn over the material and assist in putting the fire out.

There was no damage to equipment at the landfill site and no injuries were sustained.

The fire did not affect the Household Green Waste Site, which is adjacent to the landfill site.

Both facilities were open yesterday as normal.
