Guernsey Airport scaffolding could be removed soon

SCAFFOLDING at Guernsey Airport might be coming down in the not too distant future, States members were told yesterday.

But States Trading Supervisory Board president Mark Helyar said that this was not something that could be guaranteed just yet – two years since the scaffolding started going up to protect the roof of the airport terminal and to enable potential repairs.

Up to £300,000 has been budgeted to cover the cost of the scaffolding and the project to identify all the problems with the roof, he said.

Scaffolding has covered the terminal since Christmas 2024 but there has since been little clarity about when it might come down.

But in answer to Deputy Gavin St Pier’s question about the length of time that scaffolding had been in place and how much longer it was likely to be there, Deputy Helyar said that work was being done to try to address this.

His board had spent quite a lot of time on the subject.

A more complete insurance claim had been made to repair damage to the roof, but following further investigations the board understood that the rest of the structure might be able to come out of the capital programme, and instead dealt with as a ‘running item’ out of revenue of the airport, rather than a large rebuild project.

‘I can’t guarantee that that will be the case but that is what we are working towards so that the scaffolding can be taken down,’ said Deputy Helyar.

A contractor had also been engaged to repaint and repair the airport walkways, he said.
