P&R pays tribute to outgoing UK Prime Minister

Guernsey’s political lead on external relations has paid a warm tribute to the outgoing UK Prime Minister.

Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation yesterday and Deputy Steve Falla was quick to express his appreciation for his approach to the islands during his tenure of office.

Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation yesterday and Deputy Steve Falla was quick to express his appreciation for his approach to the islands during his tenure of office.

‘The Policy & Resources Committee is grateful for the support and interest that Sir Keir Starmer has shown in Guernsey and the other Crown Dependencies during his term of office as Prime Minister, including productive bilateral meetings in the fringes of British Irish Council summits,’ he said.

Nominations for candidates to replace Keir Starmer as the Labour leader, and therefore Prime Minister, open on 9 July and close a week later.

Informed sources suggest that the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Brunham, is the red hot favourite. But Deputy Falla wouldn’t be drawn on the implications of a Burnham premiership for Guernsey.

‘I won’t and shouldn’t publicly speculate on UK politics.

‘No matter what happens next, the Bailiwick benefits from a deep and respectful relationship with the UK Government, through the Crown.

‘Our constitutional relationship is centuries old. This means our relationship stretches beyond parliamentary terms and across all political parties.

‘Guernsey’s government is sending representatives, as usual, to UK party conferences this autumn, including the Labour Party Conference.

‘That will be well timed as the Labour Party’s leadership contest should have concluded by then and UK Government posts will have been reconstituted.’
