The business leading the charge is recruitment company OSA, whose members are looking forward to incorporating the daily outdoor walk into their everyday working routine next month.
‘It’s a great opportunity to get some fresh air while taking meetings instead of just staying inside,’ said OSA managing director Sophie Gregson. ‘Grow is something we all feel passionate about as well, so we wanted to support them.’
Grow is a local charity dedicated to empowering adults with disabilities by providing them training and a safe work environment in horticulture.
‘We’d love to see more businesses sign up – just being able to get away from your desk and go outside can be so refreshing and can help you think more clearly,’ said Grow director Marguerite Talmage.
WAG to walk Grow Green Miles
DOG walkers, families, businesses and clubs are among those that have signed up for this Grow’s Green Miles fundraiser.
People are encouraged to get outside and walk one mile a day for the month of May.
Sadie Bewey, chair of the therapy dog charity Wellbeing Animals Guernsey, and a committee member of the Friends of Grow, highlighted the strong link between community walking initiatives.
‘We walk our dogs every day anyway, so joining Grow Green Miles means we can exercise them and raise money for the charity at the same time,’ she said.
‘Every autumn WAG holds a series of walks throughout every parish, and some of these have been included in Grow’s suggested routes.
‘All of them will be downloadable from the Grow website, or walkers can choose their own favourites.’
With or without accompanying pets, participants are encouraged to fully immerse themselves in nature by taking photos of anything interesting or unusual they encounter along the way, including flora and fauna, scenic views or distinctive granite features.
Walkers can also download the iRecord app from the Guernsey Nature Commission to log and share wildlife sightings.
The commission’s ecologist, Charlotte Burgoine, will be present at the first walk to demonstrate how to use the app and distribute wildlife spotter sheets.
Grow Green Miles officially begins on Friday, with an inaugural walk starting from Grow’s headquarters between 4.30pm and 6pm, followed by a barbecue on the Grow site.
Registration is now open, with entry priced at £15 for adults, £5 for children, £30 for families, and £150 for corporate teams of up to 10 people.
