Ladies’ Pool to reopen after leak repair work

The Ladies’ Pool at La Vallette has taken a wellness break of its own this week – after receiving leak repairs and maintenance work, it should be back in action by the end of today.

Work began on Monday and was expected to take three days, during which time the pool has been closed, with some short-term restrictions in the surrounding area as machinery was moved on site.

It is thought some leakage has always occurred at the pools, as it is difficult to make granite walls watertight.

However, the extent of leakage at the Ladies’ Pool had impacted its depth, reducing it by about 30cm between tides.

Following community efforts to reopen the diving board last June, this work will help to maintain the correct depth of water under the diving platform, but the main purpose is to maintain the well-loved site.

‘While it may not be realistic to expect to entirely seal this kind of historic structure, these works will help us understand the art of the possible so that we can make improvements and enhance this much-loved community asset,’ said Jim Robinson, director of natural environment at the States, in a statement released earlier this year.

The work included repointing the pool’s weathered mortar joints and addressing other areas of concern, including cracks in the foundation rock and holes between the rock and the granite wall.
