Manager Mike Lucas said it could have been possible to repair the damage but it was decided to have the entire roof replaced.
‘The uprights are going to stay but the cladding and the roof is going,’ he said. ‘We’ve had it on the cards to do for the last five or six years so it’s forced our hand, and we think now is the best time to do it.’
He said the rising cost of building materials also led the garage to do the work before they became even more expensive.
The total cost of the project is between £120,000 and £130,000, and although insurance will pay for the part of the roof that was damaged this will probably amount to only some £20,000 or so, Mr Lucas said.
One major change will be the removal of the glass atrium.
‘We’re going to have a completely flat structure with no glass and all new low-voltage lights put in,’ he said.
Scaffolding has now gone up and Channel Welders are due to start the replacement work today.
Mr Lucas said that work should be completed by about the middle of July.
The garage will be able to provide business as usual for most of the time, but Mr Lucas said it would have to close for a couple of days at one point, and he hoped that regular customers would go to its other site for fuel, Cobo Service Station, when that happens.
