Male Uprising Guernsey has previously run campaigns encouraging men to ‘check your balls’ and has gone below the belt again with its first 5K ‘Budgy Fun Run’, sponsored by Convex, which will take place on Saturday 20 June.
‘Previously we did our Bermuda Shorts Week, and we wanted to try something different so we are hoping this inaugural run goes well,’ said organiser Mike Richards.
While the focus is on fun, the cause is deeply local, with every penny raised during the Budgy Run staying in the island, helping MUG to spread awareness of and support those affected by male cancers in Guernsey.
‘Cancer is rubbish, and this is a bit of light-hearted fun on a Saturday morning to raise awareness and money to support those affected, as cancer can effect everyone, families and carers too,’ said Stuart Bisson of Convex.
MUG is offering an incentive for early registrations. The first 80 participants to sign up and confirm they want them will score a free pair of limited-edition, custom MUG Budgy Smugglers to wear on the day.
Registration is officially open now via a £25 donation on the event’s official JustGiving page. Participants must state their name and swimwear size preference in the donation message to secure their kit.
‘We are approaching 50 sign-ups and counting and are just short of £1,000 raised so far, so there is still space for those who want to be signed up within the first 80,’ said Mr Richards.
The charity is hoping to have 200 people running on the day and anyone can take part.
‘Even though MUG is a charity for male cancers, women are very welcome to join in the run as well in swimwear as it can affect everybody,’ said Mr Richards.
The run kicks off at 9am from the La Vallette Bathing Pools, taking runners along the seafront to Salerie Corner and back. Participants will be treated to coffee and bacon rolls at La Vallette after crossing the finish line.
