Frogs are always busy for Grow

FROM plant sales to charity events, the Friends of Grow, or Frogs as many people know them, are always busy.

The fundraising arm of Grow supports the charity’s vital work. Grow supports adults with learning disabilities and difficulties to develop self-confidence and life skills and enables them to be included and valued within a workplace and the wider community by providing occupational training and mentoring in a safe and stimulating environment.

Grow is funded by a combination of a government service-level agreement with Employment and Social Security, sales from the training cafe and shop, and donations, legacies and fundraising – which is where Frogs come in.

Richard Battey has been volunteering with them since 2022 after coming across an article about the charity in the Guernsey Press. Close links with the chairman saw him step forward, as well as a personal connection with the charity.

‘I had an interest in the charity as I had a cousin with Down syndrome, so I understand how important this kind of thing is, and I was at the end of my career and thinking “what can I do now?” So the opportunity came up at the right time, as well as that connection,’ he said.

Jake Bradley decided to get involved with Frogs after working with the Communication, Interaction and Autism Service and seeing the opportunities Grow offers through that.

‘Everyone has been really warm to me and you can get involved as much or as little as you can,’ he said.

Jake has been volunteering with the charity since January and said he has enjoyed it so far.

Sadie Bewey is the lead for the charity's volunteers and has been on the committee for eight years, but volunteering was not a new thing for her.

‘I have always been involved with PTAs and scouts and I knew someone who works here so I thought I’d get involved,’ she said.

One thing the three volunteers said they enjoyed was the camaraderie.

We have a lot of fun. It’s always such a good atmosphere,’ said Richard.
