Sally and Charlie Ogier both volunteer in the shop in Mont Arrive and started after they retired.
‘I started in 2018 and originally worked in an office and did some analysis work, but when my mum died I needed to fill a hole in my life,’ Sally said.
‘Mum had been in a residential home and they were amazing there and I saw the shop advertising and thought that was a way I could help the old people.
‘I got hooked. I started coming twice a week and now I do three times.’
Charlie has been volunteering since 2023 and works behind the scenes making sure all of the donations in the shop work before they are sold.
‘I repair things and if toys come in that don’t work it’s my job to make them work,’ he said. ‘We also do PAT testing.’
Sally said that meeting people coming in to buy or donate was her favourite part of volunteering in the charity shop.
‘People give with their hearts,’ she said.
‘We are the custodians of the island’s generosity.’
