The club is open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 3pm, and aims to provide a comfortable meeting place for the older members of the community, where they can take pleasure in the company of others, enjoy good food and benefit from the facilities that the centre has to offer.
‘We could not run without them. Every lunch needs four or five volunteers and then we have afternoon tea,’ said manager Cheryl Lowe.
As well as in the kitchen, the club needs volunteers in the lounge to provide activities for the guests.
For Karen Oliver, there is a personal reason why she chose to volunteer with the Jubilee Social Club.
‘My mum used to come here and she loved it,’ she said.
Karen has been volunteering there for two years.
The volunteers in the kitchen said they enjoyed the work they do because of the camaraderie.
The jubilee service is currently in desperate need of more volunteer minibus drivers. There are potentially more than three mornings a week where there are no D1 licence holders to transport guests to the club.
If you are able to help and have a licence that would allow you to drive a nine-seater minibus, contact Cheryl on 07781 127620.
