As Guernsey’s only learning disability football team, there is no opposition on-island but the team plays against others in the UK and Jersey.
Joe started at Guernsey Dynamics four years ago and remains an assistant coach and committee member.
‘I used to play competitively, but suffered a bad knee injury so I stopped, but then my stepson with additional needs started getting into it and I offered to help in any way I could,’ he said.
‘I love it. I never thought I would get as much from it as I have, but seeing the group develop and enjoying themselves is the most rewarding part.’
In Guernsey football for people with disabilities is not as established as it is in Jersey and the UK where the team will soon be travelling to Ireland to compete in the George Best Community Cup.
‘It has been a genuine pleasure to see these players progress to silver medallists last year in Belfast’s George Best Community Cup,’ he said.
‘We have close links with Jersey too – they have a much bigger learning disability network.’
The club holds one session a week and currently has about 14 players.
