Prev walks 500 miles and then 500 more

AN ISLANDER has set a new world record in covering 1,000 miles on foot in four weeks.

Mark ‘Prev’ Prevel used the challenge to raise funds for Les Bourgs Hospice.

He has lived with serious lung and health conditions throughout his life, and was diagnosed with chronic emphysema at the age of 31 in 1993.

The condition makes it difficult to breathe, and he was told he might have only 18 months to live.

But three years later he underwent three life-saving surgical procedures.

‘I could’ve been one of Les Bourgs patients 30 years ago and it makes me think that at any point, at any time, people can be reaching out for your help,’ he said.

‘It feels good to have raised more than £1,100. The support out there was amazing and I’m hoping the continued interest will take the total to more than £2,000.’

Mr Prevel was nominated for the Pride of Guernsey’s Overcoming Adversity award in 2021, recognising his fundraising efforts in walking, cycling and running in support of Royal Papworth Hospital – where he received his life-saving treatment – as well as two local causes, Friends of Frossard Ward and Lungevity.

With this year marking the 35th anniversary of the local palliative care hospice, and 30 years since Mr Prevel was assessed for a lung transplant – the local trooper felt motivated to brave his toughest challenge yet for the hospice.

He walked and ran across the island throughout June, fitting in the miles around his work.

Calculating that he needed to walk 35 miles every day of the 28-day challenge to cover the record-breaking distance, Mr Prevel often had to make up for lost time at the weekends – striding 50 miles some days, and 100 miles over one particular 24-hour period.

With about four hours of sleep a night, he lost nearly a stone, and completed just over 2.1m. steps.

To verify his feat, Mr Prevel has applied to the Guinness Book of Records and the World Book of Records.
