The call was received at about 6.30pm about an outside fire at La Corbiere.
‘We didn’t have an exact location at that point, so we initially dispatched one water tender with a crew of four people,’ said watch commander Alex Clark.
‘They arrived at the car park at La Corbiere but the fire was actually in the pines which was about a 200m walk down the cliff path, so access was quite hard.’
The wind direction was blowing the smoke back from the area that fire crews were entering which made it challenging.
When they arrived at the fire, it was established that more resources were needed.
‘I then came with a rescue tender and a water tanker. When I arrived and surveyed the scene, I then made the decision to call in to alert the crews to man the station,’ said Mr Clark.
‘An extra water tanker was brought along because the nearest hydrant was in the lanes on the entrance to La Corbiere.
‘Lots of hose was run out which is why we ended up with quite a few people there, just to get the water to the fire and the wind direction and speed made it difficult.’
It is estimated that 40 lengths of hose was used, with each length 20m long. Fire crews left the scene at about 2am on Monday.
