If approved, the former Guernsey Information Centre at North Plantation will become a multi-purpose educational and cultural venue dedicated to the author, who lived in Guernsey for 15 years from 1855.

The centre is intended to comprise a museum, interpretation centre, performance and event space, and a learning hub.

Larry Malcic, chairman of the Victor Hugo Centre Guernsey LBG, said the new centre would be ‘a home for our creative community’ and would draw an international audience.

The LBG had previously signed a letter of exclusivity with the States for use of the building, subject to the funds being successfully raised, while the details of a long-term lease were agreed.

In November 2024, the States also agreed to match funding of £1 for every £2 raised, up to a maximum of £2.5m.

More than £5m. has been given or pledged so far by private individuals and charitable trusts, meaning that with the States’ donation the total raised is more than £7.5m.

Deputy Yvonne Burford, vice-president of the Policy & Resources Committee, said the planning application was an ‘exciting step forward’.

‘It is a great example of what can be achieved through collaboration between the States and the passionate individuals driving this vision forward.

'Not only will this project breathe new life into one of the most important heritage buildings in St Peter Port, it also has the potential to support economic growth, strengthen our tourism offering, and provide cultural and educational opportunities for islanders of all ages, she said.

Deputy Lee van Katwyk, tourism lead for the Committee for Economic Development, said the Victor Hugo Centre was ‘a truly monumental achievement for the Bailiwick. Our community must be commended for coming together to part-fund this culturally and economically significant project.

‘I look forward to seeing how locals and visitors are inspired by the Victor Hugo Centre as it moves toward fruition,’ he said.
