‘Jersey have created an assisted dying model we can copy’

The politician who proposed legalising assisted dying in Guernsey has commended Jersey for creating a ‘robust and workable regime’.

A requete on the issue was brought forward by Gavin St Pier, who was Policy & Resources president at the time, in 2018.

A requete on the issue was brought forward by Gavin St Pier, who was Policy & Resources president at the time, in 2018, but it failed to gain States backing and assisted dying remains illegal in Guernsey.

Following the news that Jersey’s assisted dying law has now received Royal Assent, Deputy St Pier said he was delighted that the law would come into effect in September 2027.

‘Jersey are to be commended for not only recognising that this is an issue which commands the support of a significant majority of the public, but for the way in which they have developed a robust and workable regime. In doing so, they have created a model which we can copy,’ said Deputy St Pier.

Since the subject was last debated in Guernsey in 2018, he said a number of jurisdictions have approved assisted dying, including all the Australian states, New Zealand, Ireland and Spain.

‘I have always been consistent and clear in my support for assisted dying and it remains my intention to give the States of Deliberation an opportunity to debate this issue during this term of government.’

He added that Jersey will almost certainly be the first jurisdiction in the British Isles to implement assisted dying legislation.
