During last week’s tax debate, which will resume in September, deputies backed a move calling for a freeze on all public spending for the next three years.

Deputy Mark Helyar said it was ‘a surprising result’ after debate late on Friday had been dominated by critics of the amendment, but hailed it as ‘a good move’ towards repairing public finances and restoring confidence in the States.

But the presidents of some of the committees with the largest budgets have vowed to fight to overturn the vote and warned of serious consequences for islanders if they fail.

It will face a confirmatory vote when the tax and spending debate reaches a conclusion - but what do you think?
