Sark Shipping drops concession for medical travel

Subsidies for Sark residents needing to go to Guernsey for treatment have been withdrawn with immediate effect.

The decision has not been taken lightly,’ the company and committee said in a statement released on Saturday.

Isle of Sark Shipping has funded the concession to reduce fares for islanders attending medical appointments and their chaperones.

But following a board review, and with the agreement of the island’s Medical & Emergency Services Committee, it has been removed.

‘Both IoSS and the committee recognise that travel for medical appointments is an important issue for Sark residents, particularly where appointments require off-island travel. The decision has not been taken lightly,’ the company and committee said in a statement released on Saturday.

IoSS is reviewing all its discretionary concessions ‘to ensure fare arrangements are fair, consistent and sustainable’ and the committee said it would keep the matter under review.
