Miss Edgworth won the Homerton College Changemakers Catalyst Fund Award with her start-up business Channel Tutoring, which she said had taught her a lot to take into her own studies. She has worked with students from key stage three all the way to A-levels and beyond.
‘While working as a tutor alongside my studies, I noticed two things. Firstly, personalised support can have an enormous impact on a student’s confidence and academic progress. Secondly, many of the students who could benefit from that support are unable to access it because tutoring is often expensive,’ she said.
‘I founded Channel Tutoring to make high-quality educational support more affordable and accessible, regardless of a student’s background.’
Miss Edgworth, a second-year student, has only been running the enterprise for a few months, founding it over this past Easter break. Already, though, she has seen her business receive significant interest, and has expressed interest in expanding into Jersey and rural areas of the UK.
‘The response has been incredibly encouraging. We are already supporting students from Year 7 through to Year 13 across a wide range of subjects, and demand for tutoring has continued to grow,’ she said.
‘This August, we are also launching our first GCSE revision courses at Elizabeth College. We are excited to continue expanding our provision and supporting even more young people in the years ahead.’
The Homerton College award offers grants to five or six students of the college who are building, or are en route to building, an enterprise, campaign or product with a real and positive social impact.
‘Receiving the award was an incredibly exciting moment,’ Miss Edgworth said.
‘It has helped with the early costs of developing the business, but more importantly it has given me access to mentoring, networking opportunities and guidance from experienced entrepreneurs.’
With the additional funding from Homerton, Miss Edgworth is expanding the offerings of Channel Tutoring, now moving to provide personalised instruction on university applications and interviews on top of academic support. She intends to include specific guidance on making Oxbridge applications, managing admissions tests, and writing compelling personal statements.
‘When I was applying to uni, I didn’t really know where to start, so I think it’s really good that we’re able to expand into that area,’ she said at a recent GradRoutes event.
‘This is still very much the start of my journey with Channel Tutoring, but I know that it’s going to be exciting times ahead.’
