The streets of St Peter Port will come alive with music, theatre and show for one week instead of two this year. Jugglers, fairytale creatures, returning bands and a live statue were all invited to the launch party at Market Square on Saturday, which was sponsored by Specsavers. The festival’s founder and chairwoman, Claire Dawson soaked up the lively atmosphere of its welcome return.
‘I just love seeing the smiles on people’s faces,’ she said.
‘Everyone walking past the musicians, singing and dancing – they just light up and that’s why we love this festival. Guernsey is so punching above it’s weight with the amount of talent it has, so it’s wonderful to provide the platform for local artists to shine, and we’ve got a great committee, who dedicate so much time and work to putting this on.
‘We struggled to get as much sponsorship as we did last year, so we decided to do a better one week, than a watered down two weeks. It will end with another party here next Saturday.’
Much like in previous years, artists will take to stands at various zones throughout town, filling the streets with both local and visiting talent. Children enjoyed face-painting and dancing, while spotting a few of their favourite storybook characters at the market’s melee.
Friends and actors Chloe Dodd, Cassie Turville and Emma Barber had spent months making their magical costumes to bring the event’s fairytale theme to life.
‘This is just what we do,’ said Miss Turville.
‘I know Claire through Gadoc, where I do some of the costuming and every year we’ve been helping her out at the Street Festival. It’s so much fun, we love it and are excited that it’s back.’
