Hundreds of visitors and islanders followed town crier Kevin Moore, Miss Alderney and the ‘Yellowcoats’ of the Alderney Week team on the march to the Butes to light a bonfire and observe the fireworks to bring eight days of events to a close.
It is believed that the origins of the procession date back before the Occupation when there was an annual cattle show in fields at the top of Petit Val, where judging and festivities went on until dusk.
Without electricity and street lights islanders were said to use flaming torches to see their way back into St Anne’s.
