Visitors to island spent around £150m. in a year

Visitors to Guernsey spent almost £150m. over the course of a year, according to new official figures.

It was the first time that the States has captured spending by visitors arriving on private yachts, alongside those travelling by plane, ferry and cruise ship.

Accommodation was the single biggest area of spending at £39m., followed by travel to and from the island at £35m. and eating and drinking out at £27m. The figures also take in package trips, shopping, entertainment, tours and transport.

‘Visitor expenditure of £149m. is a clear indicator of the positive contribution tourism makes to Guernsey’s economy,’ said Visit Guernsey marketing manager Sam Claxton.

‘Every pound spent by visitors helps support local businesses, employment and investment across a wide range of sectors.’

UK visitors accounted for nearly three-quarters of all spend, while French and Jersey visitors spent 5% and 4% respectively. Those from the rest of the world, led by Germans, Dutch, Swiss, Americans and Canadians, contributed a combined 16% or £24m.

Those arriving by plane spent the most, at an average of £693 each, followed by ferry passengers at £487. Cruise passengers spent the least by some distance, averaging just £46 a head.
