Sark Prison gets renovated over the summer

LA SOCIETE SERCQUAISE has commissioned a renovation of the historic Sark Prison over the summer.

Work carried out over the summer on Sark Prison involved repairing and repainting the front door and its ironwork, before weeds are removed from the roof and repairs are carried out to the brickwork and corner wings. (34959807)

The organisation heard the idea raised at its AGM in the spring. It checked with the island’s Douzaine who said it was unable to progress such work but with a financial contribution from a Societe member, Jeremy La Trobe Bateman was able to run the project as project manager.

This summer work has involved repairing and repainting the front door and its ironwork, before weeds are removed from the roof and repairs are carried out to the brickwork and corner wings. La Societe woill add an information panel on the history of the prison by next summer.

The prison has been in use since 1856 when it was designed by the Seigneur, the Rev. William Thomas Collings on his land and built by Chief Pleas.

La Societe said that the buildiing had become ‘very tatty-looking’ and uncared for. ‘Even though it is no longer in use, we feel that it shouldn’t be allowed to fall into a ruin,’ it said.
